While searching for interesting construction proposals for FOSTEX chassis, I came across the MINI-ONKEN enclosure of the American loudspeaker specialist David Dlugos. With his permission, we built this special bass-reflex enclosure, fitted with the small 12 cm full-range chassis FX 120, and sent it to HOBBYHIFI for an extensive test.
Bernd Timmermanns developed a correction network consisting of two notch filters connected in series and thereby achieved an exceptionally balanced frequency response between 40 Hz and 20 KHz. In the listening test, the bass impressed – given the small diaphragm – with its clarity, stability and a thoroughly astonishing volume, which is probably attributable to the Onken principle. The FX 120 displayed an inspiring joy of playing. The sound image seemed lively, impulsive and sparkling, without exaggerating any frequency range. Audiophile sound quality for rediscovering your CDs and music albums.
Owing to their high-impedance behaviour, the MINI-ONKEN additionally prove to be an ideal partner for tube power amplifiers.
