Based on a Fostex design proposal, which was originally fitted with the FE 108 E Sigma, I tried out the Fostex FF 125 K in the BK 108. The new WK series (as well as the earlier K series) is excellently suited to being supplemented with an additional super tweeter from approx. 7000 Hz. The FF125K has meanwhile been replaced in this kit by its successor FF 125 WK.

Since the treble range was not optimal, I supplemented it with the Fostex FT17H, which results in a 2-way horn loudspeaker with an outstanding price/performance ratio, relatively small dimensions and yet an incredibly high sound pressure of 95 dB/W/m !

And the enclosure is ideal for the DIY builder – it consists of boards with exclusively right-angled cuts, which you can obtain in any DIY store.

Later, this bass horn also proved to be the optimal enclosure for the limited FOSTEX special model FE 138 ES-R.

“The playfulness that this dainty horn loudspeaker conveys to its audience is considerable. This is certainly due in good part to the astonishingly high efficiency of 95 dB ! The Fostex horn, however, also displays a completely different sound philosophy:

Whereas the TB horn played voluminously, downright bass-powerful, but rather restrained in the mid-high range, the BK 108 FF places its emphasis on the mid-high range. The lowest registers seem taut, clear and remarkably deep, but can fall behind in the process.

Standing as close as possible in front of the rear wall of the room, this impression is put into perspective. Standing free, they tend towards the ascetic direction. “The O-Zone Percussion Group” shows what the Fostex horns are best at: drums in all their shades. Then the small transducers virtually explode.

There is class in the way these loudspeakers come out of themselves. But they also cope with demanding material: Vivaldi’s “Four Seasons” on original instruments or a cappella choir (Livingston Taylor with “Grandma’s Hands”) they play to the fullest satisfaction of their listeners. That they occasionally do not quite stick to the truth is readily forgiven, because the slips move on a subtle level; they only reveal themselves when switching to loudspeakers with reference status.”
